Baby Agatha
Agatha Wyman

Do artists have more insight into man’s basic and base natures, more knowledge about the trials and tribulations of man, more understanding of human needs and desires, a greater grasp of the ways and wherefores of present day, or a glimpse into the eye of God? Are they alchemists turning rock, clay, paint, into objects of astonishing beauty; seekers of truth who live outside the norm and are nourished by their beliefs and convictions? Probably none of these and probably a little of each. For shouldn’t an artist, to be an artist, look for what is beyond selfness and, even in extreme introspection, try to capture a universal essence of something — to preserve it in a song, a story, a stone? Although only the greatest artists can achieve this with each work of art, I try.

My images are simple and common, but the festive balloon or the child’s games or harlequin are somewhat awry. And under the smile that I seek from the viewer, I also strive for his silent admission, “Yes, I have been there; I have played the games, juggled my dreams, and awaited the fete that never came.” —AW

Agatha attended various schools in the New York area, including The New School for Social Research, The School of Visual Arts, and the Art Students League, and eventually was graduated with honors from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY with a BFA in Ceramics. For several years after that, The Old Church Cultural Center and School of Art, Demarest, NJ was her source for both learning and serving.

She recently completed a residency at Peters Valley in Layton, NJ, where she centered on a series called “Games,” a social comment on society’s reinforcement of man’s competitive nature. Currently delving into drawing, painting and poetry, she continues to work in ceramics and research the complicated chemistries of the medium.
